PDI Trainee Franchise

Looking to refine your teaching skills and boost your chances of passing your instructional ability test, all while potentially earning £1,000+ per week?

Trainee Driving Instructor (PDI) Licences

With Bill Plant Driving School’s PDI scheme, trainee Instructors can take advantage of comprehensive support and professional development. Our Approved Driving Instructors will sponsor and mentor you as you gain valuable practical experience with real paying pupils. After successfully completing your theory (ADI Part 1) and driving ability tests (ADI Part 2), you can apply for a PDI licence, unlocking further training opportunities and bringing you closer to launching your career as a Driving Instructor with our esteemed franchise.

We’ve all heard the saying, “practice makes perfect,” but what does that mean when it comes to becoming a fully qualified Driving Instructor? After passing the Part 2 test, trainee Driving Instructors have two options: proceed directly to the Part 3 test or apply for a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) licence and undertake an additional 20 hours of training.

A PDI licence, also known as a ‘pink badge’ or ‘pink triangle,’ gives trainee instructors the opportunity to practise their teaching skills with real pupils, much like a provisional licence for learner drivers. This allows you to gain essential in-car experience before taking your final test. Ready to start your career as a Driving Instructor? Explore our packages to find the one that suits you.

Since the 2017 update to the ADI Part 3 test, which now requires trainees to demonstrate their abilities in an actual lesson with a pupil rather than through role-plays, the need for practical experience has become even more vital. The benefits of holding a PDI licence include:

  • Gaining hands-on experience by practising the teaching methods you’re learning with real pupils.
  • Developing your in-car approach, ensuring you deliver calm and effective lessons.
  • Earning a wage (full or supplementary) while your licence is valid, helping to fund your training.
  • Gaining a realistic understanding of what life as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is like.
  • Receiving 20 additional hours of supervised training with an experienced ADI trainer.
  • Building your confidence and consolidating your teaching skills before taking the ADI Part 3 exam.

To apply for a PDI licence, you must do so directly through the DVSA, not via your training provider. To qualify, you must have passed the ADI Part 2 test and completed at least 40 hours of training with a qualified ADI.

To apply, complete the Instructor Training Declaration (ADI 21T) and the Application for a Trainee Licence (ADI 3L) forms with your ADI trainer.

A PDI licence costs £140, which can be paid online to the DVSA by debit or credit card. You will need your online user ID and password, which can be found in any communication from the DVSA.

To be eligible for a PDI licence, the DVSA requires that you be deemed a “fit and proper” person at the time of application. This generally means meeting certain personal and professional standards, including:

  • No motoring convictions or ongoing court proceedings.
  • No history of being disqualified from driving.
  • No bans on working with individuals under 18 years of age.
  • No record of inappropriate behaviour or financial misconduct.

In practice, meeting these criteria ensures that you can provide high-quality tuition that will help your students pass their driving test with confidence.

The DVSA imposes the following restrictions on holders of a PDI licence:

  • PDI licence holders cannot advertise their services independently. All tuition must be provided through the sponsoring training establishment listed on the PDI licence.
  • PDI instructors must not advertise themselves as fully qualified Driving Instructors. It must be clear they are still in training.
  • If a PDI moves to a new training provider, they must apply for a new PDI licence under the new sponsor.

For more information on PDI licences, you can read the official rules and regulations on the government website.

Trainee instructors cannot advertise independently, but as part of the Amplify Driving School franchise, you’ll have the opportunity to promote your services under our well-established and respected name. With our strong industry reputation, you’re sure to attract more students and enhance your earning potential.

The DVSA requires PDI licence holders to complete an additional 20 hours of training. While some schools charge for this, we offer this training completely free of charge. Additionally, we provide a free half-day workshop to ensure you’re fully prepared for your Part 3 exam.

With a PDI licence, you can begin giving lessons and earning money before achieving full ADI status. Depending on the number of hours you work, trainees can earn between £550 and £1,100 per week, enabling you to start generating income immediately.

Our PDI franchise gives you full control over your diary. You can schedule lessons around your existing commitments, making it easier to balance training with any other work or personal responsibilities.

As a PDI with Amplify Driving School, you will only work with pre-booked, prepaid students. This reduces administrative tasks, such as chasing up enquiries or dealing with cancellations, allowing you to focus on teaching and maximising your income potential.

These licence badges are paid directly to the DVSA.

How much can I charge as a PDI?

As a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) with Amplify Driving School, you have the opportunity to earn an average of £36 per hour for driving lessons, all while gaining valuable experience teaching real learner drivers.

Do I have to wait 6 months before taking my ADI Part 3 exam if I apply for a PDI licence?

No, you don’t need to wait for the full six months. You’re free to take your ADI exam as soon as you feel ready.
