What to Expect

Getting behind the wheel for your first driving lesson can feel overwhelming, but there’s no need to worry! No one expects you to drive onto a busy road straight away. It’s completely normal to feel nervous, and we’re here to guide you through the experience with ease and confidence.

Here’s a handy guide on what to expect from your first lesson and how you can best prepare for it.

  • Bring Your Provisional Driving Licence
    The first thing your Amplify Driving School instructor will ask for is your provisional driving licence. You’ll need to have this with you, as it is required by law before any driving lessons can take place.

  • Dress Comfortably
    It’s important to dress appropriately for your first lesson, especially when it comes to footwear. Choose comfortable shoes with a flat sole that will allow you to operate the pedals with ease. Avoid shoes with high heels or thick soles, as they can make it harder to control the car.

  • Remember Your Glasses (If You Wear Them)
    Your instructor will need to ensure that your eyesight meets the minimum standards set by the Driving Standards Agency. You may be asked to read a vehicle registration plate from a distance of 20.5 meters in clear daylight. If you wear corrective lenses, be sure to bring them along.

When preparing for your first driving lesson, it’s important to dress appropriately, especially when it comes to your footwear. We recommend wearing comfortable, flat-soled shoes to ensure you have full control over the pedals and can focus on the road ahead.

What to Expect on Your First Driving Lesson?

On your first driving lesson with Amplify Driving School, your instructor will start by driving the vehicle and taking you to a quiet, safe area. Here, they’ll introduce you to the car’s controls—explaining what all those levers, buttons, and flashing lights do, as well as when, why, and how to use them.

The goal of your initial lesson is to lay a solid foundation for your driving education, helping you feel comfortable with the basics before moving on to more complex skills. Don’t hesitate to ask your instructor questions if anything is unclear—they’re there to guide you every step of the way!

How Much Control Do You Get?

In your lesson, the car will have dual controls, so your instructor can assist if needed. You won’t be expected to master everything on your first lesson. Instead, you’ll learn the basics step by step, building your confidence and skills gradually. Your instructor will guide you through the car’s controls and concepts at a comfortable pace, helping you become a safe, skilled driver over time.

After Your First Driving Lesson

At the end of your lesson, your instructor will review your progress and discuss the next steps. Your first lesson helps you get comfortable with the car and your instructor, with confidence building over time.
